Open Source Got Physical This Week
July 7-13, open source skipped the chatbot leaderboard and shipped embodied AI, medical data plumbing, and a sovereign European MoE.
Closed labs had nothing open to show July 7-13. The interesting stuff all came with a GitHub link and it all got physical — depth, flow, and pixels you can actually use.
No new flagship weights. Just better ways to read the world.
###ReChannel: steal the diffusion model's eyes
ReChannel (arXiv:2607.06553, July 7, MIT) asks a good question: what if a text-to-image DiT already learned geometry and we're just decoding it wrong?
They freeze FLUX-Klein, throw away the VAE decoder, and add a shared token-local linear head — about 33K parameters, no convolutions — to read dense predictions straight off the tokens. Patch-to-token-to-patch stays, RGB channels become depth, normals, matting instead.
It sets new SOTA on trimap-free matting, KITTI depth, and referring segmentation, and it's 2.48x faster than the edit-plus-decode alternative at the same 4B backbone. Lightweight LoRA per task, frozen backbone.

Caveat in the README: this is an inference demo, not the eval pipeline. Training code promised for late July. Still, the idea lands — generative priors as perception backbones without paying the decoder tax.
###RynnWorld-4D and Robostral Navigate: RGB is enough
Two embodied drops, same thesis: you don't need expensive sensors if your world model is better.
Alibaba's RynnWorld-4D (arXiv:2607.06559, July 7) co-generates RGB + depth + optical flow — RGB-DF — in one diffusion process from a single RGB-D image and a language instruction. Plus Rynn4DDataset 1.0 with 254.4M frames, and RynnWorld-4D-Policy, an inverse dynamics head that reads the 4D latent in one forward pass to output robot actions at 9 Hz+ without multi-step denoising. Bimanual manipulation, closed-loop, synced geometry and motion.
Mistral's Robostral Navigate landed July 8 — 8B, 76.6% on R2R-CE with a single RGB camera. No depth, no LiDAR. That's the only verifiable embodied number that week with receipts, and it matters because it says indoor navigation doesn't need a hardware stack.
###MedPMC: the boring pipeline that actually helps
Yale BIDS-Chen Lab's MedPMC (arXiv:2607.07673, July 8, Apache 2.0) is data plumbing, which is why you'll actually use it.
Five stages: PubMedBERT screening, ViT multi-panel detection, YOLOv10 separation, InternVL2.5-4B-MPO caption alignment, ViT medical classification. Applied to 6.1M PMC articles it yields MedPMC-11M — 11M image-text pairs, 95.3% medically relevant versus 19.7% in the prior PMC dataset. Their MedPMC-CLIP gains 7.1 points average zero-shot AUC across 26 benchmarks and 11 specialties, despite using less than half the pairs.

###Soofi S: Europe tries sovereign
Soofi S 30B-A3B (arXiv:2607.09424, July 10) is the political one. 30B total, 3B active MoE, hybrid Mamba-Transformer for near-constant KV-cache as context grows. 27T tokens, German deliberately up-weighted. Built end-to-end on Deutsche Telekom's Industrial AI Cloud in Munich.
The claim: best aggregates among 17 open base models, and ahead of Olmo 3 32B and Apertus 70B on code in both English and German.
The promise: weights, intermediate checkpoints, per-source data accounting, and training/eval code under "highly permissive, open-access terms." As of writing that's still a promise — no live HF repo verified. Treat it as open-weight-plus-transparency until the license file lands. But if they ship what the paper says, it's the first sovereign European foundation model with real artifact depth.
###What I'd pull Monday
Grab ReChannel and try it on your own depth/matting task before you train anything. If you're in robotics, compare RynnWorld-4D's RGB-DF outputs to whatever depth estimator you're paying for now. And if you're in medical, don't train another CLIP — run MedPMC's curation on your own corpus first.
