One Flagship Shipped This Week: Claude Opus 5
A quiet flagship week where Anthropic owned the window with Claude Opus 5 — not a raw intelligence leap, but a cost-per-task one.
It was a quiet week for flagship models, and that's why the one that did ship stands out.
For July 21-27, I checked the usual newsrooms — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, xAI, Mistral — for a new foundation model with a verifiable date. Only one cleared the bar: Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 on July 24.
###What shipped: Opus 5
Opus 5 is the successor to Opus 4.8, same base price, now the default on Claude Max and the strongest option on Claude Pro. Anthropic's framing is telling — it's not pitched as "smartest at any cost" but as the Opus tier rebuilt for long-running agents. The tagline in their post: "a step change improvement for the Opus tier powering long-running agents."
If you've been waiting for a GPT-5.6 follow-up, you didn't get one here. OpenAI's GPT-5.6 (Sol/Luna/Terra) launched July 9, outside this window. Inside July 21-27, OpenAI shipped product and infra notes — a Hugging Face security incident disclosure, ChatGPT for small business, OpenAI Presence — but no new weights.
###The benchmarks: cost is the story
Anthropic didn't lead with a single MMLU number. They led with cost-efficiency curves, which is more honest about how these models actually get used.
Here's what they claimed from internal runs:
-
Frontier-Bench v0.1: SOTA, and "more than doubles Opus 4.8's performance at a lower cost per task." Footnote matters: internal run on mini-SWE-agent + GKE, mean reward over 5 attempts per task, with Opus 4.8 as fallback on safety refusals for Opus 5 and Fable 5.
-
CursorBench 3.2: At max effort, within 0.5% of Claude Fable 5's peak score, but at half the cost per task. Also the best performance-at-a-given-cost on high, xhigh, and max effort settings.
-
OSWorld 2.0 (computer use): Beats every other model at any given cost, and surpasses Fable 5's best result at just over a third of the cost.
-
GDPval-AA (Artificial Analysis): Anthropic says Opus 5 is SOTA on coding and knowledge work here, but still behind Mythos 5 on cybersecurity. That split shows up elsewhere too.
-
OSS-Fuzz (cybersecurity): Close to Mythos 5 at finding vulnerabilities, "considerably less successful at developing exploits." Anthropic says this is intentional — they didn't train Opus 5 on cyber tasks. The general capability still lifted identification, but not weaponization.
-
Behavioral audit: Scores 2.3 on overall misaligned behavior, which Anthropic calls the lowest of their recent models.
A lot of this is chart-only in the post — no numeric tables for HLE, AutomationBench, or DeepSearchQA in the HTML I could extract — so treat the absolutes as "Anthropic's internal harness says" until third parties repro. Frontier-Bench and GDPval-AA are the two you can actually go check independently.
###What didn't ship
No verifiable flagship release from Google DeepMind, Meta, Mistral, or xAI with a date inside July 21-27. I tried their blogs and RSS feeds directly; most returned JS shells or Cloudflare challenges, and Mistral's news page only surfaced 2024 and 2025 posts in that fetch. That doesn't prove silence — it proves I couldn't verify a ship.
###My take
The interesting shift isn't that Opus 5 is smarter. It's that Anthropic is competing on dollars per completed task.
Doubling Frontier-Bench at lower cost, matching Fable 5 on CursorBench for half the price, beating it on OSWorld for a third — that's a pricing story disguised as a benchmark story. And it's consistent with where the labs have been heading: GPT-5.6's own July messaging was "frontier intelligence that scales with your ambition" and price-performance framing.
If you're benchmarking this week, don't just run the leaderboard. Re-run your own agent tasks and log cost per successful run with effort dialed up and down. That's the curve Anthropic wants you to look at, and for once I think it's the right one.
